Who We Are
"Phi Delta Theta was built on three pillars that haven’t budged an inch since the Fraternity was founded by “The Immortal Six” way back in 1848 at Miami University. The pillars are: The cultivation of friendship among its members, the acquirement individually of a high degree of mental culture, and the attainment personally of a high standard of morality. Shortened, we refer to the principles as friendship, sound learning and rectitude.
The history of the New Mexico Alpha chapter at the University of New Mexico is quite rich and extensive.
New Mexico Alpha came to fruition on September 6, 1946, when the General Convention of Phi Delta Theta granted a charter to the local petitioning group. Earlier attempts to obtain a charter had been made by two previous groups as far back as 1915. The third and successful attempt was launched on March 13, 1946 by the Albuquerque Alumni Club of Phi Delta Theta. The club held it’s first formal meeting on March 26, 1946.
The local group received the answer to their petition; and invitation to the General Convention. Phi Delta Theta selected two active members to attend, and the Alumni Club appointed on of their members to represent the University’s bid for the charter. Although the charter was granted, the initiation and installation did not take place until the weekend of December 6, 1946, where for the first time in 99 years of the fraternities existence, the entire General Council was present to conduct the rituals.

Like many chapters and fraternities, the New Mexico Alpha chapter of Phi Delta Theta has faced its ups and downs. In 1989, the chapter was rechartered, but only until 2007. On May 5, 2011 new life was given to the New Mexico Alpha chapter after the alumni had once again filed for the chapter’s return to the University of New Mexico. Finally, on October 18, 2013, 50 men were initiated into the fraternity.
Today, Phi Delta Theta boasts one of the highest GPA averages out of all the IFC fraternities at UNM. New Mexico Alpha attracts men who are involved with the UNM community and who live up to the three cardinal principals of Phi Delta Theta: Friendship, Sound Learning and Moral Rectitude.
